My mind remains at the kitchen table,
though the body lurches to labor,
cleanly uniformed,
groomed to specs,
hourly paid,
and resumes
the private hell
that is employment.

There,
the shell of me,
in a dejected loop, performs
an act devoid of spirit,
for I only receive the most
basic sensations
as my kettle shrieks,
my waters bubble over;
through all this
“sense of urgency.”
