Combined With the Mud

Mark Fleury

Combined with the mud,
The pictured sun

Sleeps the shade to the rain
And cold, pierced

By the colors
Of a birdsong’s
Thought, branch not leaving the bird.

The tree’s arms,
Armed with green,

Take to the lightning flash
To give the end of the branch
A place to begin. Light, full of shadow

From underneath darkness,

As sight takes flight,
Fluttering a prayer
To include what’s not breath.
