Having Returned

Having returned
From the Deep South

Of the hallway’s ghost,
I realized that my Middle

School was shaped
Like a Nazi ‘S’

And that I’ have to fight
To protect the territory

Of my fame. To always wait
In line until it’s my audienced

Turn to succeed or fail. My turn
For a free throw, fouled martyr!

Yet the shot taken’s
Of faith, from dual vision

Of throated thoughts, to God!
To where you, my Love,

Are the door within to
Everyone’s shared essence.

Jazz would not only
Save the south, but the compass:

Heart’s mind-centered
Rhythm, syncopated, syllabic.
