I Could’ve Hid

Mark Fleury

I could’ve hid
My reptiles in suits, soliciting
Prostitutes.

That’d be snow for dinner,
Sunlight bottled,

A gunfight under table and sill.

I was better than what cell phones offered,
Even in a crisis. Green in sunrise though,

Couldn’t have prepared me for dessert:
The restaurant
Also kept a dry ice machine under the table.

That broke me, just in time for baked moon
On a green plate.
Elusive, not as easy to contain
As the sun, the moon kept making
The room blue, so if not for the machine,
Or maybe because, I thought I could contain
Holy Demon as well. So my confession
Is that Work is contemplating
A six pack of celestial bodies
Flowing through the buzz of an air
Conditioned brain, as though sugar cubes
Don’t have different sides.

Form keeps filling up content,
All the way. I mean out-word fills up
Breath/spirit, fills up, no room to spare.

So instead of a check, the waitress gave me
A metaphor, saying: “I contain
The essence of everyone except
Myself. That’s who you have.”

She is an Angel and had mistook
A gun for a windowpane inside
An infinite line’s space.
I have to keep going up forever
Is the high I mean. Where mind
Precedes thought. Word as gated entrance.
Just as if breath. I mean ‘restaurant’
Is code for Holy Ghost equals emptiness.
An opening.
