I Emptied My Garage into the Backyard’s Trees

Mark Fleury

I emptied my garage into the backyard’s trees,
And there hung the contents of ladders

And oily rags from leaf to stem and green.

The clouds gathered into the spout of a funnel
And spun me dry. That was as long as my reach

Could hold the rain hostage

Under the conditions provided
By where the sides of my roof met.

Chimney smoke left in the shapes
Of my wardrobe’s ghosts as though I
Could carry my family tree like swamp

To mosquito. Shady and wet.

I wanted to give my nightmares a chance
To undress. And reach the tops

Of their skies. That way the blueness
Would spin down from an unknown source.
And since every open door
Has its day, to fill dawn’s
Day-shell with rhythm, I listen to
The pinkness for the ocean.
I mean I was never left alone.

No matter my masks I’d had in the trees
To scare away twilight. To carry
What the raindrops were full of
Would require using the ladder
To climb a tree’s center ring - wave

From pebble - a car fueled by tearsÉ
Anyway my tires rarely left the road
Of your mind’s town as my headlights
And chattering teeth made their shadowy
Way to now’s glittering city.
