In Between Lyric and Narrative

Mark Fleury

As language’s essence is
Within it (me), so the feminine -

My lyrical push up and in -
Is to be served, never whored,

For art. Heart meets breath at the
End, of a sentence, or of a

Row in music class. Head and beard
Hung down, to die in the song.

And the guitar teacher
Says he gets it for free.

A surprise, like thinking
A carton of milk is full,
And crashing its emptiness
Against the fridge’s ceiling.

Poor boy bound to die.

God’s the space, the tunnel
I’m trying to push toward
The top of your head
When you’re inside me,
Pushing my opening down.

You who are above
The realm of the subdued,
Spined demon. Under pressure

Of always the same age
When the band forms

And ends, my one road Spirit
Up wavered, breath first,
Toward blades of sun,

As though the gossip
Of God touching brain
Could take anything real

Away. Unless having the power
Of a stubborn ego counts for a reason
That making love touches my mind
Instead of yours. Diamond

At top of ring. And it’s
Always. Constant. Then Soul

Washed out, made fertile
Ground for poem.
