Likened to a Carpet That Has Its Own Laws

Mark Fleury

Likened to a carpet that has its own laws
For keeping in the tensions

Between loss and gain of window light,
I felt all walked on, toward and from,
By my own need to be saved. Pacing

And looking through the hole
At the top of my head for myself.
Between hair and lost child,
The sadness that’s older means more alone.
Darkness flooding down from God.
Frowned dawn cloud at the gate
Of whom I couldn’t be. The tragedy

Of family: bones forcing the body
From youth toward heaven; as smartness.

Drawn to an ocean of shadow. God in
My own mind. Too much
Everything, so I used my eyes as thoughts
To give anyone outside my name
What isn’t good.

And marching for blood, through the tunnel
Between hell and heaven, upward,
Pipelined, I’m awash in oil.

Can’t get to me.
