Longing Still for Moonlit Water

Mark Fleury

Longing still for moonlit water,

I’m in darkness
To get the smoke smell -
Waving hands as flicker

Of wings - out the window.

Or longing to wear blue
Sky, demon’s like a t-shirt.

Clouds’ arms across each the
Other’s shoulders,

Photographed, and the Angel

Sees what’s dying and what’s
Born: demonic vision, the

Heart I in. And in eating
Graduation shadow-cake

In our separate bodies,
I speak along breath’s cliff with one

Head like music and many
Voices to sing along with:
The instant soul’s been fed
Today’s battle with last night.

My knees trembled in the noonday
Sun that I tried to punch
In the face, vehicle where
Earth and poetry add up to the heaven
That’s what your Angel possesses.

I’ve learned to love
The consummation of its place.
