My Favorite Costume

Mark Fleury

My favorite costume
Was the hall with the high school

Locker, me in between
The combination and

The Child who, having burned

The tip of his/her nose
On the sun, completes
Spirit’s journey to speech/body
With breath. Decision: for the angel

Who two’s always wings,
A soul got burned as well,
From throat to in between eyes.

Nearly suicided by intellect,
When form tries to rise into a
Heartbreak’s angle, mistook as content.

Now wings rather than
Containing form.

And just beyond where I wait for spine
To be flown up in, you are the essence
That fills up all forms.

Underwater liquid locker opened
Into itself; you, the Angel, climb inside
My body of shadow. Here. Only this costume

Can’t be zipped out of,
Or approached like the edge
Of a neighbor’s yard.

Set up for bubble burst
To include facing my worst mirror,

At best a place to stand, the leak
In my church drum has formed
A bead, a basement ceiling
Tremble of atomic light. Pop!

Fills a shrink’s head
With gold-plated military hair.
Paid in soul. Wants me to feed
Belonging to what’s outside
Myself. Insatiably not free
Of insurance. I had to mop up
My hippie mess from the angel
Of reflection.

If I’d taken the advice
Of the broken window pieces
They would have all gone in
With their outs: Drips that won’t
Drop. Orb. Unstreaked.
Yes, that cartoon.
