Sent into Enemy Eyes

Mark Fleury

Sent into enemy eyes,
To storm the lids,

Recalling background plan
To rush the beach when the tide’s

Contained roar drove me to split
The curtains from my stage
Of entrance and exit

At the same time: a rock
Unable to leave its own
Edges is what my war
With me has become.

On the front steps of Heaven,
In between pillars, taking a drag
Off of a cigarette to reach
My last name.

Maniacal as it was to not heed
The light and instead make a habit
Out of melting

Snow into doors
To find a key
To spring, I entered

Another’s grave; in between
The eyes of the Cross

Is a verb.
