So I’d Only Play Basketball

Mark Fleury

So I’d only play basketball
If my coach’s plastic hair matched,
Although gray and black, his sour-faced
Reprimands, the same way his gum didn’t help
With his nicotine cravings.

O.K. I guess the plastic
Was the ball and his hair reflected
On the floor; gum shriveled mask

Of manhood. You see he has a son
Too fragile even for furniture.
Coiled again! Dad must shoulder the
Trophies. Living room roped off,
Plastic on carpet, locks of hair

Drilled up from the ground.

On the court, Namesake’s chest would
Cave in like punching a clock.

Throated vices, therefore,
Must be done in separate rooms.
