Stunned

Mark Fleury

Stunned. Gripped ‘round
My ground by lotus hearts,

And the flash of a frozen
Mustache in the thawed spring

Of an assembly line’s
Visible air,

My lungs laughed
The length of time between

Summer and fall, enough exhale
To fit where the leaves fell.
What my shadow sees.

I could’ve measured breath
By what we held inside

Beached machine wheels,
The blue sky

Lapping the skeleton of
The tree in my memory of
Dawn’s window. That lightning.

And the leaves strewn
Across my path had their day

In the sun’s teeth. The smile
Of hunger, satiated from can’t
Be separated from place.

On the way to the weight room
Where I’ll work out these blue
Petals from inside

The center of my garden,
And into an unforced
Top of stamen.

At least that’s where I’d be
For your roots in me, the ground.
