The Rhythm of What’s In

Mark Fleury

The rhythm of what’s in
Breath, of heart, forces self’s
Surrender to freedom.

The face of a desert
Cracks in a bloodline’s age.
So refuge is sought
In a cool basement bar’s
Music. Laughter.

I’m Word, and for me
Poetry’s my Queen.
You’re me. And for you I’m

Saddled with thoughts
As germs I can’t shake

Of listening to radio stations
Broadcasting hiring freezes

For glides of skaters
Across as many lakes
As I can fill up with blue moonlight.

Feeling, in my spirit space,
That I can only get to you
In me. A letter sent
To the front gate
Of heart from mind.

The skaters have reached the bar
And expect they’ll drink music
From where their skating started.

The chatter of dream teeth;
Lifeboat adrift; a ripple that turns
Paper into ocean waves.
That’s what I mean by Muse
Is feeling.

Moon’s form’s full of
Emptiness, flecked with features

Riddling the broadcasted
Pull to tides. Back in time
To a rock the waves hit.
Or a photo of one
Taken by you:
To remember it’s cradled
By its own containment
In no escape, jagged, angled.
That’s its feeling I am
For your core. How I can be
Your youth after addiction
To stopping the flow of waves

Has rolled away,
Held in the water.

That’s looking through
A boulder by noticing
That I’m on top of its wings,
In between / the opening.

Softness. Air.
