A Volcano Is There

Mark Fleury

A volcano is there,
Above the blue beach,

Its belly
The shadow of the moon

On fire. A golden
Thread, with centipede legs,

Circles the top
Of the island’s opening ring.

From a passing
Cloud balcony,
I’m the Angel,
Looking down into myself.
I tell my Mother, the aether behind me,
I’d suspected all along,
In the eye of hell-copter shadows,
That Father of time

Is phallic. Pen.
That the lifeline
Is an empty shaft, curved line sentenced,

Healed, through Christ,
By the dying thought-syllable.

A metaphor for that is Father’s
Head, and the time it takes
For it to reach space, that winged

Opening for all light
To fall into. And the atmos(fear)’s

Island for the silhouetted
Tropical leaves’

Skeletons to hell
Against at dusk,

Is the syllable as edgeless top
Of eye’s

Hearing: Mary’s
Impression through empty ego’s

Hairline fracture
In the bones of a soul.

The whole world
Feels in between aether
And that line, earth,

Form. Stanzas
Of worms to humble me.
