Angel says, “I need
Openness for my upward,

North-windowed, resurrection
As the sentence.

Sometimes I think north,
With its tents and mountains,

Really means the nothing
That’s necessary for dying.
And that eastern sunrise
Means everything.

I’m the west. My heart,
Like blown glass, contains
All of the sunsets.

I look downward, into
The hell, the south that is

This world, for the imagery
Of poetry, and the activity of
Its objects are in conflict
With only harmony itself.

It’s like cracking the code
Of another political season:
Head and heart, again,
Battling each other.”

The internal sunrise has a real
Core, and I’m loyal only to its order.

Flying up, northward,
Together is the essence
Of the east.

So these poems are in a western,
Sunset hell, but the basement
Brick wall, with torches and chains,

Is less real, and adds up to less
Than the dream that is Angel,

And I’m free to be devoted.
