From the Depths

Mark Fleury

From the depths
Of our head’s black hood, the pattern

Of rain across the lake was the view we had

Of the rocky shore
Under the bridge.

The edge was a curtain
Separating, breaking up the moon

From the bedream’s
Black branched tree.

I could’ve found moonbeams
In an apple core’s seeds

If I’d not feared the rain’s
Talk of being embraced by the shadow
Of the tree trunk’s crib death.

But I have to remember images from my past
When we’re on the beach together.

That’s where my engine is.

I looked at the place our one heart broke
And knew the future too is a memory.
Opening eye the curtain. And naked as rain
Is I can’t reach the edge of its message,
Even when my boat floats from our head’s
Protection into its drenching.

The way hundreds of birds leave the top
Of a tree at once, spread, swoop
And circle the specific sky,

And onto another, the wind

From water forces me to remember the scent
Of my previous death, that was of innocence,
Not old age. I had to start
From an unfinished life.
