I Had To Stand

Mark Fleury

I had to stand
Under understanding,
Looking up from the bottom
Of the ladder
To a Klan-robed boss,
Finger curling
Upward toward pillow-cased
Eyes.

If time is money, what’s space?
Can I pick that instead?

And suspicious of clocks,
I’ll put one on my heart,

To grace the recesses
Of my start in a factory
That makes charts for where
To find one’s way through

Caves in chests.
Having beat its way from me
To you, slave to Muse, here is a shared

Valley. I like to put
A bear’s strength there, where fires

And floods rattle the air

And stars are boats
Crossing bloodstream rivers.

I like to put your heavy
Sighs on my lies,

Like an eclipse, so when the hour,
Minute and second hands reach
The embrace of the other side

Of the sunstream, all
Of the different burnt-out
Caves in an ape’s day jobs

Wind out of the bottom of a mountain.
Sun rays, coiled like ropes
There, woven together to
Constitute the underlying
Texture of the valley’s

Sky. There instinct shakes hands
With the heart sailors.
