I Knew I Had to Go

I knew I had to go
Lower to worship; like hearing
The song of the cardinal
You named Victor

Before I look up to see
The red and orange set against
The mid-June green leaves,

I’m free for all of us.
And devoted, I obey,
Bow down from where my love
Is most ashamed. Ground for each
Painted-toed and nyloned step

Into the belly of the volcano.
Where the ripest yellow of leaves
Are being digested, glint

Off projected angel wing,

Echo on tide: Dying thought
Saved, Serpent is sun.
