The Transformation

Mark Fleury

The transformation must include
Rain cutting lower clouds

Inside the red apple skin

Of the sky’s forehead.
Blood the color of dusk, over

The field goals full of ash.

A rumble fish, flip flopping
At ground zero, in the gray blades of grass.

My TV’s been rolled in
To that fifty yard line.
The gilded screen, sweating beads of blood

The color of dawn, and as deep and wide
As the ocean, is reeling the azure fish
In with the golden throated

Thread, vertical as a tree trunk,

Its sky cored in the chest of an apple

Seed. It’s there the screen

Has carved black and white
From a hole in the ocean

With a beam disguised as a fishing line.

And like the fish
That only fights when not in the sea,

The black and white world,
Taken from our heart’s ground

And organized as thoughts
On the TV Mother Ship,

Is the storm. Is the blue war.
The Siamese Fighting Fish was already
The whole sky and didn’t need
To be saved by society’s aquarium.
