There’s a Hole

Mark Fleury

There’s a hole
Leftover in the sky
That’d been used
For lowering flags through.

Now the pole
Is the center
Of gravity for
The thought-spun
Windmill blades in

The chest of a soldier-slave,
Making his way
Back to Master.

White flags,
Shaped like skies,

One for each eye, breaks

His falling prayers
That he’s trying now to send back,
Via smoke signals, from the barrel
Of his gun. The hole

At the end is the shore,
A code word for detachment.
But first all of their bullets,
Aimed at the stars, are emptied
Instead into engines
Of wind-powered cars.

And the floodlights that open
From those wounds are licked
Up and off of the lips
Of my own dream face
By Dog/God like batter.
