A Sound Too Intense

Mark Fleury

A sound too intense
For Angel to look
Upward into Devil’s eyes,

Inside, she disappears
Where each exhale starts,

Many lifetimes to evolve
Where the layers of a
Multicolored diamond
Have their edges ledged
And split by the laser
Beam principle that seems
To slow an airplane down
To near stillness, calmness;
The passengers’ reference points
For its speed are mountain

Peaks 30,000 feet below.
I’m in that precision, crossbeam
The wings of my riveted
Flight into the expanding
Death of time and space.

Heart. First into the setting sun:
Poetry has to be opened
Outward toward western pain,

A mind that hardens
And divides itself into the grains
Of sands’ contractions, sucked with
The riptide’s dusk to circle
Back and try to invade the dawn.

But that the eastern sun
Rises Christward, is news
Of where Angel’s wings are.
