Angel is Space In Time

Mark Fleury

Angel is space in time
And Serpent is time in space;
Together each place is
Everywhere at once.
Look at the stars, creep,
Bend and ring, they’re all

An egg, cracking the end
Of the night sky’s tail.

Liquid constellations
Spray their yellow openings,

Circling the broken,
Nested shells with the cave’s
Self that’s found its way out

Of itself. At cliff’s edge,
Dawn is still deep in

The blue, behind gray clouds;
Where it’ll rise from is held

In the palm of a tree branch’s hand.

To make the sunrise possible,
The moon is falling through
The center of the wind’s
Tropical vastness, built
To outlast us all. The beach
Can’t leave the sand! I won’t try to

Stand in your shadow’s President.
I’ll let him have the roots of
The galaxies that you are dragging
Across the Oval Office carpet
In the middle of the night;
Live wires on the head of the enemy
Sparking at your master’s feet.

The reward for your bounty
Will be a primal one: it’s the right
To not let your core get soft,
As though your eyeballs are eggs
With colors painted on.
