Example’s Always The Best Way

Example’s always the best way
To understand, especially when it comes to

Slavery: the underground sun
Glows purple like a key
On a hardwood floor,

Caught in the backwards
Glance and smirk of the unmasked

Thief who has come through
My door to steal the red
From the sun in my sky,
Serpent from Muse, for a necklace
Of teeth.

I had smiled while wearing
A hood that covered me
Like clouds over the moon.

Rivers once flowed there,
So I thought its essence was edible to me.
I wanted to pop the stars in
My mouth like grapes, and get drunk on
Pure sound: music. That desire made
My smile a sin because air
Can’t absorb intoxication
The way the earth can.

Serpent, ground, saw through
The mirror of my masked pain

That isn’t rain. Seeing

Is that the planets
Are not the pearly whites
Of a mouth for consuming
The giant outer darkness.
No giant whiteness to win
The war, just a lot of people
Killed for no reason.
