Ground’s Verb

Mark Fleury

Flakes of volcanic
Ash fall from the mountain

Peak’s hair. The opening,
Where the view of the

Orange molten flowing
Melted rock

Grips the core

Of the earth, can be seen where
The light is shaved off of the sun;
Underground tunnels
Start where the first layer
Of my eyeballs’ pain ends.

The snowy beard

Of the cliffs has white roots, too,
The same color as the cigar ash
Drifting down from the red hot
Embers of the erupted snowflakes.

The train as a real thing
Is consumed as it circles the
Mountain’s volcanic vibration,

And the brain in the mountain’s
Sunlit head has a soft

Field of grass under its burning

Heart. Eye-browed

Clouds will rain the dust
Off the faces of the crystal

Clear lakes at the base
Of my body

Of rock. Nightfall laps my
Stone shores with its tongues.
The wind is thirsty and so drinks

The layers of moonlight on boulders
That the space in between volcanoes

And mountains

Had sliced off of the sun.
Like an onion-verb, perception
Is peeling away. The exhale’s
Where creation is, a way
To cure hunger for openness.

The difference between who I am
And my name

Is that of mountain and volcano.

Ground’s verb.
