I Can’t Help But Be

Mark Fleury

I can’t help but be the opening’s

Oneness. My liberty swells there
As if the sound of a bell

Could become red paint,

Cracking as veins in
The white walls of the sight

That circles hell.
All language fits easily there.

Churches boil in apocalyptic
Fantasies. Stoned webs’

Hearings of their own
Pupils loosen the eyes

Of those soldiers protecting
The castles of Holy Wars. There
Their they’re, caught
Like the dust of all my crumbled
Crowns, dies.

You might ask how my head got surrounded
By a moat,

And how bicycle wheels set
Like the sun.

My slavery to God
Is a metaphor for a machine’s
Servitude to us humans.

So I can’t become a robot,
Just like time’s not money.
