I Tried to Contain Myself

Mark Fleury

I tried to contain myself
In the different names
Of those I’ve known to keep
The Devil outside.

Starting with as high
Up the tree as I could
Instead of the root.

Mind’s eye can only heal
Where it got broke,

So my head and heart split
In two is dawn and is lust’s goal.
Oneness has been sewn together

With the camera flash

Of a summer solstice reach,
The highest glint on the top
Of a west coast’s dusk wave,

Part of the same ocean
That swallows the sun; the ocean’s

Very own white-hot midday vanity
Of a million mirrored names.
