If The Devil

Mark Fleury

If the Devil
And I share the same room,
Not divided by walls,

I want to lick

Its star
Like a stamp,

To feel if the texture
Is like the grid of a screen door
When piffed by large wet snow flakes,
Sentenced.

Frankenstein’s
Monster’s neck has the threads
And holes all the way around
To prove its attachment to one

Head, which is a detachment
From not only the sound
That Devil’s

Eyes can see

But the round vibrations
Also of what they themselves are:

Holes, metaphors for wings,
Syllables seen by the sentence itself.
I’m not bothered by a line
Being like a casket that’s been robbed

Because it’s only the Soul-beam,
Regardless of its many different places,
That interests me. What I’ve always wanted
To say is that the line
Is a symbol of the sentenced Angel
And the syllable is a symbol for the Devil.
