Like City to Country

Mark Fleury

Like city to country,
The sentence starts in the
Syllable-seed.

A sky-scrapered nest
Listens to the bend of beak

That is an arrow.
The space of the forest
It’s shooting through is
The shape of the sentence’s
Relationship with emptiness.

Sentence has got the spine
And emptiness the wings.
The bird song is a weapon,
A rung on a ladder

Where its ambition, in a suit and tie,
Hangs on with one hand while
The other flails open a briefcase,
Expanding like wings of white
Light, as papers fall, blank, filled with

The angles of chirps. The ground reached,
In the eyes of ambition’s climb
To the top of the poem,

Is an origami newspaper
In the shape of a cliff, unfolding

The sky for his pupils, bleeding
Ink and opening

Their parachutes.

Their flowers.

Their trumpets.
