On This Side of Cancer’s Diamond

On this side of cancer’s diamond-
Bridge, contraction takes me to the depths
Of my destruction: a thought
That has died and become openhearted.

Where the syllable is.
The streams of light
That fall from the top

Of Niagara’s cliffs

Are caves, tunnels

That end with red lights
At an otherwise deserted
Intersection-cross at 3 AM.
The driver is falling in

An orb of water, a bubble
On the end of a needle,
Wheel at the center for

Disappearing. The veins
That crave stopping mind
And body and feeling

At the same red heart-light,
So that there’s no difference,

Has a mouth as big
And thirsty as Niagara’s.
The collective scream
Of the rainbow’d drops
Of separated water fills
Each other with echoes so
Their original sounds are
The same as the distance traveled.

They open their wings
For all of the traffic noise
To roar in their isolated, cubed

Sinister and smiling engines.
And they race toward oblivion
While the flapping air
Lifts them up, keeping them still,

Addicted to destruction
Only where life begins.
Sure oil is there,

But so is the sun.
