Pulling On Serpent Mask

Mark Fleury

Pulling on
The handlebars for a wheelie,
Into a bicycle’s dusk street,
I rode straight through a
Childhood dream of a

Serpent-mask’s smiling

Earth drum.

My spine, me pretending
To be a Serpent Hero,
With the stretchable band
That holds the

Cyclic wings

Of my face in place,

Can be compared to the tightening
Of a snare drum.

A rhythm that began underground,
Left to right, where the rainy night,
Sleeping-sunset, lying and creeping
On the ocean floor, is, touched now,
And read, by the beat of ocean shaped

Drumsticks.

Each political side
Is a different sea, spit to drown in.
Each speck of salty mist flying
From the sticks

A different machine that does tricks,
Consumed, chicken bones and all,
By the flapping, winged

Eyelids

Of Serpent’s electric,
Flash-filled clouds.
