That Was The Voice

Mark Fleury

That was the voice
Of beyond language. So’s this.
Don’t bother denying that

The crumbs that fall from clouds

Of bread won’t be picked up
In the beaks of snowbirds
And taken back to skies
Of clear blue eyes. A train
Is leaving, throwing a speck
Of dust that’s saturated
With water. It’s in a puddle
On a street by the tracks.

Onboard the Leaders of
Those who think money is more
Valuable than people crave
Hearts of Angels sandwiches.

Devil Boss will protect her
From them. That’s the oblivion part.
The train splashing into a pool
Of dark at the end of the tunnel:
Flash of blade, tip of pen, mistook

As gold. The double meaning of
Boss – inward and opening – begins
And ends with speech’s rhythm.
