The Poem’s Sentience

Mark Fleury

The poem’s sentience
Winning against the
Forehead’s empty cross
Doesn’t attempt to diminish
The sky, but just give it tangibility.

The emptiness had done battle
With its own sound, heart against head,
Only relieved by hunger to look,
From an eternal outside, into
A content-window, at the world.

When sound loses, paranoia sees a person
Too depressed to get out of bed.
Victory for emptiness is a mind too high.
And Light has problems of its own: Instinct
To be in control over an other, battling
An inability to satisfy neither
Sound nor emptiness.
Relief only comes from knowing, trusting,
That emptiness is Light.

And Light’s shadow is sound.
