Words Cover Me Like a Blanket

Mark Fleury

Words cover me like a blanket,
And will until I’m healthy enough
To grin again while dreaming,

Knowing that my wings
Are grounded by devils’ feet.

The round, ever expanding
Sound waves, spreading from the
Epicenter of a thrown stone,
Has no one to hit unless

The sun shines blood.
Shout through the empty
Orb of the sky at your
Enemy and the echo yells
Back from inside your head:

A diamond’s sprawl.
How’d the angles of
Serpent’s painted green
Caged tail without a body
Get caught in there?
Creeping for a way
Out of concentration.

The emerald flames
Flower neath a fence,
Also green, in the open mouth
Of its fanged eyes,
Looking up to the dirt
It slithers through. Snaking
Around word-rooted stems,
Spine, flesh and tongue,
All opening their painful,
Evolving pinkness toward

The same night, are one
Stamen’s tip. The umbrella
Of the sky starts there, leaned
Into the shoulder of devil,
Backboned since becoming the head-
Syllabled to Angel as
Heart- sentenced.
