Shivering Hearts
Mark Fleury
Shivering hearts
Of heads, split open
By war, reveal children
Huddled in the safety
Of sirens. The building that is
My body is surrounded. I can’t escape.
My brain is saturated
With a wounded shadow.
The bones in my battle
Fatigues unbend like the last
Set of stairs of a fire escape,
To a Ghost in my flat-topped
Head, unhinged, a window
Pane that sets a bird free.
