We’ve crossed the shallows; dressed
A spate of wounds.

Sand no longer breaches our up-turned eyes.

But what will we make of what we share? A huge room,
Warmly lit? Or a paste, hardening
As the years pass?

Will our keel hold,
Heady with what we’ve reclaimed
From torn pages?

Or regret weight down our opened hands?

We must relearn how best to speak; renew
The wealth of our lungs.

Come. Step forward.

I’ll do what must be done; there’s no undoing
That swath of luster
Linking your lips to mine.
