God Is Not Deaf

Again, the church bells peal.
A mile removed they clang,
shake buildings
penetrate closed doors
rattle sparrow’s perch.

The sound, like winter morning cold
enters marrow of the bone.
Do priests think god is deaf?
or do they cover screams?

“It is truth,” the bishop scolds,
that God can not be deaf.
