People That I Used to Know
By Tina L. Jens
The people that I used to know are vanished in the mists
Half-forgotten memories of a woman I haven't been in years
Centuries pass in a blink of an eye
Continents shift in the fast lane of an inter-state highway
I greet old neighbors and former best friends
And wonder what to say to them
My mother and I walk paths familiar in childhood
Over-grown with brambles now
We prick each other with the thorns
And barely notice the roses.
