When I learned to deal
with my own fears about abandonment
by pushing people away first,
I thought I'd learned such a clever trick.
I congratulated myself
on my independence and self-sufficiency,
pretending
that when I started to weep uncontrollably
after drinking a bottle or two of wine
that I was just drunk.
