Last Night Half a Bottle of Vodka Went Walking Out My Door

D. Michael McNamara

It’s not in the dictionary
but there’s a “hey”
that means
shut up
and come here
so I can
wrap my arms around you
and kiss you
like a lover should be kissed.
“No Return”
On a path which they call
Superfire!
or no man’s land
or, sometimes,
in extreme cases such as mine,
the point of no return.
But what they don’t know
is that I keep on ticking
when there’s life to be had
and that I keep on kicking
like bad poets and bad rhymes.
But even when the South
swallows me up,
what they don’t know is
that I love you like a teenager;
like a high school love affair;
like a free-fall which I didn’t pay for
and wish my friends
hadn’t talked me into;
(like a monster under my bed
which I know isn’t there
yet still wish I didn’t believe in).
There is Want and Don’t Want
and Too Drunk to Know the Difference
and I wish I could tell you
how much I want you here.
