A GYPSY WORLD OF MIRTH

After a hot bath,
we sit on the porch
of the Hotel Victoria
and observe those
that soon will die.

There is a caravan
passing, brown earthen
camels blending into
the approaching twilight,
French officers drinking
absinthe from a clumsy
wooden cafe.

Old-fashioned and high,
the ceiling creates heat
in its own right.
We catch the smell
of curd cheese and ale.
Blue smoke rises in
the distance.

We move through
the delirious night
in hunger for food,
the dancing girls.
It is a silly time
to consider plans.

The caravan disappears
into the desert,
and rain joins us
for the duration.
Incessantly the night
chatters in Arabian
voices of guns,
rations,
the morning sun.

In our dairy
we record the haunting
that will join us
just before dawn.
