ON THE DAY AFTER I DIED

well, actually this is the day
after the day i almost died,
& i'd like to report that i got up
thanking my gods&feeling good,
but i didn't.
i'm still rather weak,
& my throat hurts.
i can't seem to
eat anything,
& i haven't forgiven
my enemies
especially the
ones inside,
but the plumber finally fixed the sink.
my overdue unemployment check arrived,
a good friend called from boston
just to see how i was doing,
& although an ancient mentor
rejected both my manuscripts,
he did it just as kindly
as he could.
there's a party at my
first wife's tonight,
& i'm not sure
if i'm going,
but i'm glad
to be around
to make the
indecision.
