He lived so long ago
that we still
know so little
about him.
Just a few
nuggets
salt the mines
of misinformation.
That he was born
in Bohemia
in 1842, dies
in the shipyards
at Manitowoc
fifty eight
years later.
That he bore
a tool chest
over six feet
long by wagon
from job
to job.
Other than
these, we don’t
know what
he was like
or much else
save the fact
he never lived
to fulfill
the intention
thrice made.
All he owns now
is chiseled rock
which doesn’t bear
the original
family name
but carries
a more beloved
inscription
of his
Anna
just the
same.
