A Quiet Moment In Your Head

By Peter Scott

Have you ever seen your closest friends
Lying on top of you
Crossing that boundary from friend to lover
But don’t you love them anyway
Would live in filth with them
Yet can’t arise from the image
Specks of proteins, glucose
And others of the atom
Near or around your body
They live on a cliff behind a rock
Loftily above
Almost tempting the sky
You know they do not only guess
What sits nearly incognito
The shadow alluding an outline
Poison enough a defense
For awhile
But can’t you breath the reality
Traveling from forbidden garden
Through your nostrils
Didn’t you once play
A close facsimile of the game
Quitting at the detrimental moment
Avoiding a place
Where you would never be friends again
Aren’t you standing here still
And might you dwell close
Without entering
Recreating those foregone memories
The passions you bottle for later
Ingesting when you see your lover
Were it possible
Could you share with your friend
The unspoken language
Or are these dances of abstract cognition
While you cannot title
Articulate devotion.
