Excerpt from the Macabre

By Peter Scott

Early one ending of night
The telephone wailed at me
Across the connection
My girlfriend sat
Laying deep into spiel
Already late?
Had not even left!?
Depart with no
Reluctant pace'
May haste be in your blood!
For startling and grand
Her nonchalance quieted the anxiety
I would drive to her house
First pack a few bags
Then be off
On a trip to Florida
That defied logic
Absurd
A sleepy dream
Oh well
Two weeks with my girlfriend
Can hardly be more beautiful
So off on this surprising journey

Indeed it was true
They brought me aboard
Two sisters, a father
Mother
Lover and I
Trickling off the commonwealth
Through town and city alike
Cascading from North
To a far South
All bundled in a van
On our way
Still unable to speak
I dreamt I was at home
Resting in bed
Delusions controlling my movements
Yet time elapsed
Correcting false hypothesis
This was a macabre reality

Later
A second night emerged
Marking the end of our first day
Camping addition applied
There were only two beds
Where had they planned me to sleep?
With absolute disregard
All prepared for bed
Entering the unmistakable calm of night
I stood there
Felt dumb
The final light doused
Suddenly
Then he loveliest revelation came
Kristie’s voice rang out to me
Are you just to stand there all night?
Come to bed!
Rest over here with me'
There was almost indignation
From that tone
Quite obviously I was expected
So barring further conjecture
I raced to bed
Snuggling deep next to my dear
More could be said
But you know the end
This reality is a dream of my heart’s desire.
