Dead Certainty
Mary Winters
Family ghost story: long
long ago, maybe a hundred or
whatever years past, three young
men from our Nova Scotia clan
set to sea in the “Viberna”, or
was it the “Lavinia”, as captain
first mate and cabin boy, or
something like that. It was a
whaling ship or maybe just
for cargo, maybe just fishing.
A storm came up or else it went
up on a reef, perhaps a week
or two out -- all aboard were lost.
That very same afternoon or maybe
it was three days later, the men
appeared as ghosts, all three or
was it just the captain, at the
schoolhouse or could it have been
the church -- all that is certain is
that they were dead.
