Gold Standard
Mary Winters
The one and only reason I
moved to New York City: to
wear all the gold jewelry
I want, all the time: winter
and summer; dressed up or
plain; at home and at work --
perhaps especially in bed to
celebrate the gift of a new
bracelet, necklace, ring with
its donor; to wear as much
gold jewelry as I want and
attract no attention; no snide
label: she’s “over-doing it.”
Mine the gold standard -- the
color of our sun is why an
ancient Egyptian pharoah called
the star God, the one and only
god, the first such god in
history. Gold the metal of
vows sworn; or broken, then
made right. Gold points to the
cunningly made: a goldfish.
