Bird Indoors

Mary Winters

Brain teaser: bird
trapped in a city building
-- what does it signify?

End of the world soon --
skyscraper's site
returns to meadow.

Bird is the signal of
incongruity, discrepancy:
the boundaries are
more porous than you think.
You can still be
surprised, confused.

It was only meant to
amuse; a droll distraction.
Part of a witty anecdote
not yet fully revealed.

Allegory of a “wrong turn” or
“limitation”; illustration of a
fable or Biblical teaching --
the meek shall inherit the
earth. (Bird trapped is a
common house sparrow.)

Bird in such a place is
impossible, thus a ghost
-- evidence for the
existence of the supernatural.

If the bird has been there
years: you want adaptability;
a sense of the possible.
