The Seventh Seal

Ralph Monday

You first sealed up your eyes
then your mouth, ears, last
your mind. A time like dancers
pulling the skin of stones. You
tried to interpret a poisoned
pirouette through the dragon’s mask.
Your batteries ran low; toys put
back in the box.

Then you ran to the sea that was
not full. Prayed to a black moon.
Your knuckles became a meditation,
love making a doll’s revenge.
You would eat your own heart,
spit it back at a glacier’s medulla.
Crying you would know the time
of skin is not your own.
