And the lions, yes, and the poets,
all of them with the chance to
apologize, to make a difference.
The air dark and cold and the
phone never quite ringing. Your
lover at home with her husband
and daughter. Dust on the
bookshelves. Words like corrosives.
No answers, just this endless
goddamn noise. Just this need
for affection. Father dead, sister
vanished, car payment overdue.
Walk outside. Sit in the yard.
Sound of passing cars, and of
yelling teenagers. Barking dogs.
Close your eyes and stare at
the sky. Your future and your
past, both right there.
