stepping out into the light,
disoriented,
godless but warm,
and when i ask you what the difference is
between a thing that has no meaning
and a thing that’s meaningless,
you shake your head
and smile

when the man pulls his hand out from
under the seat, he has a gun

shoots the cop in the face and,
stepping out into the light,
i turn to you and ask how many
orphans it would take to fill an ocean

i turn to you and ask how
many more miles until we’re there

don’t want an answer,
just the soft weight of your voice
